Origin[]

In Algonquian folklore, windigoes (or wendigoes) are malevolent spirits that only eat human flesh. It is said that people who commit murder and cannibalism are often possessed by windigoes. Some can summon wild animals to help them attack victims. Some powerful windigoes have been known to control the weather.

In modern psychiatry, the disorder known as "Windigo psychosis" is often characterized by symptoms such as insatiable craving for human flesh or fear of being a cannibal. This disorder has been found on many Native American people. For example, in 1907, a Cree Indian named Jack Fiddler was convicted of murder. He killed 14 people because he thought they had been possessed by the spirit of a windigo.
