Origin[]

The Beast is one the titular characters in Gabriele Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve's famous fairy tale Beauty and the Beast.

After Beauty's widowed merchant father enters the Beast's castle and picked one of the enchanted roses, the Beast catches him. The merchant begged for mercy, saying that he only picked the rose as a gift for his younger daughter. The Beast agreed to let him give the rose to Beauty, on the condition that he brings her to the castle without deception.

With no choice, the merchant agreed, and the Beast sent him on his way with wealth, jewels and fine clothes. As he gave the gifts to his daughters, the merchant tells Beauty of what happened at the castle. Beauty willingly decides to go to the Beast's castle. The following morning, the two head to the castle. Once they arrive, the Beast politely welcomes Beauty to his castle and sends her father home with a reward the following morning.

For several months, Beauty lives a life of luxury in the Beast's castle, having every whim catered to her. Eventually, she grows homesick and begs the Beast to allow her to see her family again. He agrees on the condition that she comes back to the castle exactly two months later. A few nights after she returns, Beauty had a dream of the Beast dying alone in his garden.

Two months later, Beauty returns to the castle and, sure enough, finds the Beast near death. Distraut, Beauty realizes that she loves the Beast and agrees to marry him. She kisses the Beast and he transforms into a handsome prince. The Prince explains that he was transformed into a beast by a witch and that the curse would only be broken if a maiden fell in love with him no matter how he looked. The two are wed and they lived happily ever after.
